Economic science Abstract Područje doktorskog rada odnosi se na financijsku analizu, posebno na modernu teoriju portfolija. Uobičajena mjera sistematskog rizika je beta koeficijent koja podrazumijeva normalnost distribucije prinosa vrijednosnih papira (dionica). Brojna istraživanja pokazala su kako distribucije prinosa dionica često ne slijede normalnu distribuciju. Također, poznato je da investitori različito brinu o mogućim gubicima u odnosu na koristi koje mogu imati od dobitaka. Averzija prema gubitku se u kontekstu distribucije prinosa odnosi na odstupanje prinosa dionica prema dolje, odnosno samo na donji dio distribucije prinosa (ispod prosječnog prinosa). U skladu s time, ovaj rad se fokusira na modificirani jednofaktorski model, odnosno modificiranu mjeru sistematskog rizika, donjostranu betu. U ovom istraživanju modifikacije jednofaktorskoga modela su višestruke. Prvi segment modifikacija se odnosi na uvođenje modificirane mjere sistematskog rizika, donjostrane bete. Cilj istraživanja je utvrditi postoji li veza između donjostrane bete i prinosa dionica, odnosno ispitati ostvaruju li dionice koje koreliraju značajnije s tržištem kada je ono u padu u odnosu kada ono raste veće prosječne prinose za svoje investitore. Nadalje, istraživanja su pokazala kako na tržištu postoje brojni nenagrađeni faktori rizika kojima se je nesvjesno relativno lako izložiti, što umanjuje željeni efekt diversifikacije, pa se u svrhu identificiranja nagrađenih faktora rizika koriste različiti pristupi. Jedan od njih je i korištenje različitih mjera rizika na tržištu kapitala kako bi se identificirali nagrađeni faktori rizika. Cilj istraživanja je i utvrditi može li se donjostrana beta koristiti kao mjera aproksimacije (proxy) za procjenu očekivanog prinosa na hrvatskom tržištu dionica. Osim donjostrane bete, testiraju se i druge mjere rizika. Drugi segment modifikacija odnosi se na obuhvat imovine koja se testira u ovom istraživanju, te na odabir benchmark indeksa budući da je efikasnost tržišnih benchmarka koji se uobičajeno koriste na hrvatskom tržištu kapitala upitna. Umjesto korištenja indeksa baziranog na tržišnoj kapitalizaciji, novi benchmark indeksi kreirani su metodom dodjele jednakih udjela sastavnicama u indeksu, metodom pariteta rizika, metodom diversificiranog pariteta rizika i metodom faktorskog pariteta rizika. Cilj je pronalazak benchmarka koji bi potencijalno mogao efikasno i sveobuhvatno predstavljati tržišne rizike u jednofaktorskom modelu procjenjivanja kapitalne imovine. Dosadašnja istraživanja su uglavnom bila orijentirana na ispitivanje velikih razvijenih tržišta kapitala, kao što je američko. Nedovoljno razvijena tržišta u tranzicijskim i posttranzicijskim zemljama uglavnom se nisu istraživala, pogotovo ne višedimenzionalno. Zbog interesa za takva, nedovoljno razvijena tržišta, provodi se istraživanje na hrvatskom tržištu kapitala. Zaključci doktorskog rada mogu se sažeti kako slijedi: (1) mjera rizika koja se temelji na donjostranim odstupanjima prinosa nije prikladna za modifikaciju jednofaktorskoga modela na hrvatskom tržištu dionica; (2) donjostrana beta nije najbolja mjera sistematskog rizika u odnosu na ostale mjere rizika; (3) donjostrana beta nije prikladna za procjenu očekivanog prinosa na hrvatskom tržištu dionica; (4) među promatranim mjerama rizika uvjetovana asimetrija pokazala se najboljom mjerom za procjenu očekivanog prinosa na hrvatskom tržištu kapitala; (5) indeks CROBEX je benchmark kojim se zajednički mogu procijeniti premije rizika dionica i obveznica; (6) indeks CROBIS je bolji benchmark od indeksa CROBEX za procjenu očekivanog prinosa na hrvatskom tržištu obveznica; (7) benchmark indeksi koji se ne temelje na tržišnoj kapitalizaciji mogu se koristiti za modifikaciju jednofaktorskoga modela na hrvatskom tržištu kapitala.
Abstract (english) The field of research of the thesis is related to financial analysis, in particular to the modern portfolio theory. The standard measure of systematic risk, i.e. beta, assumes normality of the distribution of return on securities. Numerous studies have shown that return distributions do not follow a normal distribution. Also, investors care differently about possible losses as opposed to benefits they obtain from gains. Concerns about losses in the context of return distribution refer to the deviation of returns downwards, i.e., relating only to the lower part of the return distribution (below the average return). Accordingly, this paper focuses on a modified single-factor model, i.e. a modified measure of systematic risk or the downside beta. In this thesis, there are multiple modifications to the single-factor model. The first segment of the modification is the introduction of a modified measure of systematic risk, the downside beta. The research aims to determine the relationship between the downside beta and stock returns and to examine whether stocks that covary significantly with the market, conditional on down moves, have higher average returns for their investors. Research has shown that there are some unrewarded risk factors on the market that are relatively easy to expose, reducing the desired effects of diversification, so different approaches are used to identify rewarded risk factors. One of them uses different risk measures in the capital market to identify rewarded risk factors. Therefore, the research also determines whether the downside beta can be used as a proxy measure to estimate the expected return on the Croatian stock market. Besides the downside beta, other risk measures are also tested. The second segment of the modification is associated with the asset type tested in this research, and to the benchmarks since the efficiency of the benchmarks commonly used on the Croatian capital market is questionable. Instead of using a benchmark index based on the market capitalization, new benchmark indices are created using the equally-weighted method, risk parity method, diversified risk parity method, and factor risk parity method. The aim is to find the benchmark that will effectively and comprehensively represent market risks in a single-factor model of capital asset valuation. The research so far has been mainly focused on examining large developed capital markets, such as the US. Underdeveloped markets in transition and post-transition countries have largely not been explored, especially not multidimensionally. Due to the interest in such underdeveloped markets, research is being conducted on the Croatian capital market. The results of the conducted empirical research can be summarized as follows: (1) a risk measure based on downside deviations of the return is not appropriate for modifying the single-factor model on the Croatian stock market; (2) the downside beta is not the best measure of systematic risk in relation to other risk measures; (3) the downside beta cannot be appropriately used as a proxy for estimating the expected return on the Croatian stock market; (4) among the observed risk measures, coskewness proved to be the best measure which can be used as a proxy for estimating the expected return on the Croatian capital market; (5) the CROBEX index is a benchmark that can be used to jointly estimate stock and bond risk premiums; (6) the CROBIS index is a better benchmark than the CROBEX index for estimating the expected return on the Croatian bond market; (7) benchmark indices not based on the market capitalization can be used for modifying the single-factor model in the Croatian capital market.
