Abstract	Spužve (koljeno Porifera) su morfološki najjednostavnije životinje (carstvo Metazoa) koje su se najranije odvojile od ostalih metazoa. Usprkos njihovoj morfološkoj jednostavnosti, istraživanja transkriptoma spužava i jednog genoma spužve ukazali su na iznenađujuću kompleksnost genoma u sadržaju gena koji nalikuju onima morfološki kompleksnijih životinja. Informacije iz dodatnih svojti potrebne su kako bi se bolje definirali odnosi unutar koljena Porifera, ali i njihov odnos prema cijelom carstvu životinja. Nakon sekvenciranja metodama sljedeće generacije, računalnim metodoma je složen i funkcijski opisan genom spužve Ephydatia muelleri. Genom sadrži oko 20.000 gena. Usporedbom dobivenih gena s bazama podataka, opisani su primjeri gena povezani s nastankom i ranom evolucijom životinja.
Abstract (english)	Sponges (phylum Porifera) are the morphologically simplest animals (kingdom Metazoa) which diverged earliest from other metazoans. Despite their morphological simplicity, transcriptome studies and one genomic study have shown surprising genome complexity in gene content resembling that of morphologically more complex animals. Information from additional taxa is required to better define the relationships within the phylum Porifera but also their relationship with the whole animal kingdom. After next-generation sequencing, computational methods were used to assemble and functionally characterize the genome of the sponge Ephydatia muelleri. The genome contains around 20,000 genes. By comparing the genes with databases, examples of genes related to the appearance and early evolution of animals are described.
