Abstract	U radu je društveni razvoj Makarske proučavan u kontekstu općega procesa modernizacije te kao studija slučaja za društveni razvoj Dalmacije, odnosno Hrvatske u cjelini, u širem srednjoeuropskom i mediteranskom kontekstu. Situacija tijekom navedenoga istraživanog razdoblja uspoređivana je po svim istraživačkim pitanjima sa situacijom za vrijeme Austro-Ugarske Monarhije. Istraživanje na primjeru relativno male sredine omogućilo je detaljnu analizu smjera i brzine modernizacije različitih aspekata društvenoga razvoja. Temeljne postavke rada bile su postavljene u skladu s identificiranim glavnim dimenzijama društvenoga života unutar kojih se modernizacija očituje, a to su: politika, gospodarstvo, društvena struktura i stratifikacija, kultura te svakodnevni život, kroz koje se analiziralo većinu elemenata društvenoga razvoja i svakodnevnoga društvenog života.
Abstract (english)	The dissertation deals with the social development of Makarska, which is put in the general context of modernization processes. The example of Makarska is taken as a case-study for social development of Dalmatia, expanding it to Croatia in general, and when possible, in much wider mid-European and Meditterranean context. Thus, the situation in Makarska during this period was compared with the situation preceding it, during the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. The research on the example of a relatively small community enabled the detailed analysis of direction and speed of modernization of various aspects of social development. Main dimensions of social life, as politics, economy, social structure and social stratification were contrasted with the elements of social development and everyday life which reflect the most of the processes of modernization. Henceforth, the structure of the dissertation is following those structures.
