Dörnyei (2001.) naglašava kako je stupanj nastavnikovog entuzijazma i predanosti jedan od najvažnijih čimbenika koji utječu na učenikovu motivaciju za učenje. Mali se broj studija bavi čimbenicima koji motiviraju i demotiviraju nastavnika engleskog jezika (Addison, 2004; Gheralis-Roussos, 2003., Mifsud, 2011.). Cilj ovog istraživanja bio je istražiti čimbenike koji motiviraju i demotiviraju hrvatske nastavnike engleskoga kao stranoga jezika te steći uvid u strukturu nastavnikove motivacije i njegovo viđenje učeničke motivacije. Također smo pokušali utvrditi postoji li povezanost između nastavnikove motivacije i nastavnikova viđenja učeničke motivacije. Pokušali smo doznati postoji li povezanost između nastavnikove motivacije i individualnih nastavnikovih obilježja, zadovoljstva poslom i školskih čimbenika. Služili smo se mješovitim, kvantitativnim i kvalitativnim pristupom istraživanju motivacije. Kao instrumente koristili smo upitnike konstruirane za potrebe ovog istraživanja, kojima smo ispitali nastavničku motivaciju i njegovo viđenje učeničke motivacije. Glavnom istraživanju prethodilo je predistraživanje kojim smo provjerili metrijske karakteristike upitnika te osigurali pouzdanost i valjanost prikupljenih podataka. Rezultati kvantitativnog dijela istraživanja potvrđuju nalaze Dinhama i Scott (1998., 2000.) te pokazuju da strukturu motivacije nastavnika engleskoga jezika čine intrinzična motivacija, ekstrinzična motivacija i školski čimbenici te da su nastavnici intrinzično motivirani i motivirani školski čimbenicima, ali ekstrinzično demotivirani. Rezultati nisu ukazali na značajnu povezanost motivacije i ispitanih individualnih nastavnikovih obilježja kao ni na utjecaj čimbenika vremena na razinu motivacije nastavnika. Također, rezultati pokazuju kako nastavnici u cjelini vide svoje učenike motiviranima. Kvalitativnim dijelom istraživanja, koristeći se polustrukturiranim intervjuima, potvrdili smo spoznaje dobivene kvantitativnim dijelom i detaljnije upoznali čimbenike koji utječu na motivaciju nastavnika engleskog jezika. Općenito se pokazalo da su ispitane nastavnice pretežno intrinzično motivirane za posao koji rade, da im školski čimbenici mogu u tome pomagati ili odmagati ovisno o opremljenosti i ozračju u ustanovi, dok ih ekstrinzični čimbenici (materijalni i statusni) prije svega demotiviraju. Dobiveni rezultati dovode u pitanje prijašnje jednodimenzionalno gledanje na motivaciju nastavnika samo preko intrinzične i ekstrinzične motivacije kao jedinih motivatora i demotivatora te pozivaju na uključivanje drugih čimbenika (poput školskih čimbenika i čimbenika vremena) u definiciju ovog konstrukta. Za krajnju potvrdu ili pobijanje predloženog modela motivacije nastavnika stranog jezika nužna su buduća istraživanja.
Abstract (english) This study addresses a largely under-researched area within language motivation research, which is the motivation of teachers of English as a foreign language (EFL). Dörnyei (2001) claims that the teacher`s level of enthusiasm and commitment is one of the most important factors that affects learners` motivation to learn. Few studies on factors that motivate EFL teachers have been found (Addison 2004; Gheralis-Roussos 2003; Mifsud, 2011). The purpose of this study was to investigate factors that motivate and demotivate Croatian EFL teachers. The main objective was to contribute to the overall understanding of the nature of teacher motivation. One of the aims of this study was to examine teacher perception of their students` motivation, and to get an insight into the relationship between this perception and teacher motivation. We also tried to establish if a relationship exists between teacher motivation and their individual characteristics, their job satisfaction and school factors. The study uses a mixed methods approach. The materials used included: a questionnaire measuring teacher individual characteristics, their motivation, their perception of their students` motivation, and a semi-structured interview. The initial pilot study helped to ensure validity and reliability of the designed questionnaires and the data gathered. The results of quantitative part of the research confirmed the classification made by Dinham and Scott (1998, 2000) stating that motivation is influenced by intrinsic, extrinsic and school factors. The results also show the importance of intrinsic and school factors in relation to teacher motivation and extrinsic factors in relation to demotivation. The findings of this study do not point to a significant relationship between teacher motivation and their individual characteristics and neither to the influence of time factor on the level of teacher motivation. The results show that teachers generally perceive their students` motivation. The results of qualitative part of the research confirmed the results of the quantitative part of the study and gave us a detailed understanding of the factors which influence EFL teacher motivation that points to intrinsic factors as main source of teacher motivation, extrinsic factors as main source of teacher demotivation as well as school factors as being an important source of both teacher motivation and demotivation. Our findings further question prior unidimensional view of teacher motivation solely through the aspects of intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and call for including other aspects (such as school factors and time) in its definition. Further research is needed before a final conclusion about the sources of teacher motivation.
